Information and Communication Technologies are a thriving knowledge field at the moment, both in the areas of research and teaching. ICT's seem to imply the progressive elimination of the time and space limitations that traditional language learning and teaching involve. They can also promote the implementation of a learner-centred methodology.
Added to that is the fact that in the last few decades self-directed learning has become a key concept in language learning.
This is the framework where the GIAPEL (Group for Research and Pedagogic Applications to languages), of the University Jaume I, Castellón (Spain), develops its current research. Since 1992, this group has worked in the training for autonomy in language learning.
The CRAPEL (Centre for the Research and Pedagogical Aplications to languages) also works on the same topic in the Nancy 2 University (France). They have worked on this topic since the 70s and the results achieved by this group have given international and national relevance to the research topic and have obtained the approval of the European Council and other international Universities around the world. The CRAPEL is considered as the main experimental centre for the research on language learning autonomy in France and around the world.
The First International Conference on ICTs and Autonomy Applied to Language Learning,co-organized by the GIAPEL and CRAPEL, aims at offering a discussion forum open to all the agents implied in the process of language learning and teaching and to all those interested in issues related to the contribution of the ICTi's to self-directed learning.
